Rang around a few places and keep getting different answers so I have a kzn130 surf, built in 1994 imported and complied in 2000. My question is if I do an engine conversion with a 1uz does it need to be newer than 1994 or 2000? Meaning can I use an older 1uz or will I have to go vvti?
Otherwise anyone know a reputable engineer in nsw that would give me an answer because the 3 I rang wouldn't say for sure unless I payed a consultation fee...

From my experience with things like this when I used to work for an importer, if there is no specific legislation that stipulates which date you should refer to, it can be left to the discretion of the engineer. My logic would say the original manufacture date of the vehicle, not the compliance date. Best to choose your engineer first regardless so you know what their expectations are before lots of hard work and money goes into the conversion. Can save a lot of drama later on \:D/

Thanks for the reply. Talked to an engineer yesterday who was willing to give some info and he pretty much said that there isnt any legislation either, however he would prefer a later model locally supplied engine... so a 2000 model 1uz vvti offered here in Australia otherwise i'll have to run it off gas. BUT it would all depend on the motor I choose so "get a motor and ring me back and we'll decide what to do then" is what he said. Which makes it a harder decision, may just go for a manual injector pump and rebuild the 1kz, too many decisions...
