Hello All,

I am having a starting issue with my 93 KZN130, it has 170 on a rebuild (pump and injects aswell). Redtop Battery 800cca,

the truck normally starts after 1-3 cranks and never had an issue. Over the last few months, I have noticed it is getting harder and harder to start.

It started off as once in a blue moon it would take a few cranks to start and it would crank slow (almost like it was low on power). Now it varies from kinda hard to start to have to really let it crank, with it cranking slowly. Once it does crank over a big puff of grey smoke comes out (assuming unburnt fuel from turning over)

I just replaced the glow plugs and checked the system, it gets 12V to the plugs and stays on at 12V for a minute after startup. It seems a bit better after doing the plugs but still getting a rough start compared to "normal"

Not sure what to chase down next, Battery seems fine at it sits at 12.2V after being left overnight, Alternator is new, glow plug system seems to be working fine. Just did fuel filter...

Any ideas welcome

What is battery voltage during cranking?

Hey Ned,

When it starts in 3-4 quick spins it's about 9-9.5

when its 4-6 slow struggled spins 8.8-9

So not sure if its the Starter struggling to spin the motor fast enough to give it a clean start.

Also in either start scenario, I am noticing a decent amount of black and grey smoke which is making me wonder if the injectors are leaking or just gone to crap and I am over-fueling with a I'm thinking something crude atomisation making it harder to ignite and with the increase of liquid volume adding greater compression resistance.

Seems to be worse when the engine is warm and has been running. Starts best 1st thing in the morning

The engine has 170 km since rebuild and same with the pump. Trans is 22km on heavy mods

Also adding a jump pack to my Red top 800cca battery does not seem to make any difference, so also thinking starter is just tired. Slow crank means I'm thinking something crude compression for startup. Extra black smoke is from the fuel getting tossed down the exhaust from the extra spins partially burnt?

Try a fully charged good battery alone and not use a jump start battery. If voltage drops below 10V, then starter could be drawing excess current and need replacing or repair.
