Hi all. I fairly recently came into possession of a cheap 3ltr auto for $800, not running (it apparently 'just stopped' one day). After double and triple checking all electrical stuff I could, eventually got to the point of compression testing and find all round low compression. A few days later and all of the pistons are removed, and I have discovered that all 4 are cracked between rings 1 and 2. I believe the impact to be from the intake valves, going by the marks on number 2 and 4 piston heads. The crack on 3 of the pistons has caused a piece to be physically loose. My main question is what would have caused the intake valve to have smashed into every single piston? The timing was checked prior to dismantling, and all 3 marks were dead on. haven't had a chance to actually measure anything yet, but it seems as tho the crankshaft is still very smooth, and even the bores don't seem to have any physical damage ( albeit a far few marks on all cylinder walls ). I guess the next question is could this engine be rebuilt or does this sort of damage cause hidden issues elsewhere ?
